History of the Wollemi Pine The Wollemi Pine (Wollemia Nobilis) is one of the world’s oldest and rarest tree species, endemic to the Blue Mountains. It was known only from fossil records, and presumed extinct by botanists, until it was rediscovered in 1994 in the Wollemi National Park, just outside Sydney. Its rediscovery is considered to be ‘the botanical find of the 20th century.’ With less than 100 adult trees known to exist in the wild, the Wollemi Pine is now the focus of extensive research to safeguard its survival.
