The Gem Palace was established in 1852 by the erstwhile Kasliwal family of Jaipur. Jewelers for over eight generations, the Kasliwals even have the distinction of being court jewelers to Mogul emperors.
Linda stopped by to meet with Samir, sixth generation of the company and of course to see some of the magnificent work.
“Originally, my family was working for different royal families in Rajistan. And what happen is, as we pass our job from father to son, the same thing happened to our artisans, because we tried to keep the skill inside the store, shop, inside the workshop. And everything is done locally. Totally handmade. Elephants, statue figure, necklaces, cufflinks, pendants, we carry everything. We really carry everything.”
“We also collect old jewelry that my family made for different royal families. We have been working for different royal families in Rajistan and different royal families in Europe and we still keep going with the tradition of making jewelry.”
And they’ve even gone state side exhibiting at The MET, Somerset House and Kennedy Center.
So what makes Samir happy? “I like to make people happy. When I am making, like when I am designing something for them, you can see they really appreciate the work I’m doing.”
